I just finished watching Matthew Vines, a 21 year old student who has spent the last 2 years researching what the bible has to say about homosexuality. What an incredible young man you are, Matthew! I hope and pray you will inspire other young people to dig under the surface of what is told to them and what religious people are wrongly teaching.
This video, although an hour long, is worth the watch. After watching two issues really strike me. One, that as a woman that for so long conformed to what I thought was right in the church, I can hear the heart of Matthew in his longing to be his authentic self – to be the person that he was created to be without feeling shame. And two, I can see the destruction of patriarchy – and it is not just on women but also on men. The patriarchal society of the Hebrews and Greeks during the Old and New Testaments put frameworks around what role men and women must adhere to. If a man ventured outside of that role it was considered “unnatural” or not culturally acceptable and it is shameful how these patriarchy constructs that are still alive and well today have provided a lens many christians that look at gay marriage and relationships as “unnatural”. Matthew does an excellent job at unpacking the cultural context of biblical references that have been used wrongly against homosexuality.
